This year was a hard one for me. One disappointment after another, piling up in all different areas. And when I’m having a hard time, my go-to is reading. Reading is my escape. Reading is my therapy. Reading is my adventure. And this year I read more books than ever.

But not all of them were any good.

That being said, I don’t post about books that I’m not in love with. The books I’m about to share with you are the best of the best that I read this year! They are my absolute favorite that I have or will buy for friends and family, nevertheless recommend to everyone I know.

Here are my favorite reads of 2017:

  • The Polygamist’s Daughter by Anna LeBaron – Best memoir I read this year. Truly a story of beauty rising from the ashes.
  • Wonder by R.J. Palacio – I read this with my 10 and 9 year old. We’ve literally laughed out loud, and my daughter and I both cried. Absolutely WONDERful!
  • Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate – I could NOT put this book down, and I doubt you’ll be able to either.
  • Uninvited by Lysa TerKeurst – Heart wrecking book (in all the good ways) about living life loved instead of lonely or rejected.
  • Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham – If you are a fan of the author or of Gilmore Girls, this is a MUST. But don’t read it…LISTEN to it. It’s like sitting down for coffee with a friend! (Also includes great writing tips!)
  • The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens – A debut novel that doesn’t feel at all like a debut novel. Full of beautiful characters with great depth.
  • Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng – A family unraveling has to come to grips with a tragedy and redefine their place in life. This mystery novel is also a beautiful family portrait.
  • Sourdough by Robin Sloan – In a time when robots are regulars in our world, a woman who programs apps for said robots, rediscovers the art of baking sourdough bread. Not as science-y or futuristic-y as it sounds. Charming instead.
  • Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty – Yes, this book was made into an award winning HBO series this year, and I read it prior to the series release (which I still haven’t seen). But this book deserves every bit of hype and notoriety its been given.
  • Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist – This book is written like poetry. A stunning portrait of how the author found hope and joy outside of the drive for perfection.

Hopefully, you will find a book in this list that is interesting to you! Maybe you’ll even get the chance to read it over the holiday break. (You know I’ll be reading!)

  • Good picks! I want to read a couple of those now :)
I would add: Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone; Alli & Bea by Catherine Ryan Hyde (I could make an entire list of just her books, though ❤) ; Shrapnel by Jessica Shook (not just saying that – that book was so beautiful!) ; GoodBye good Now by Catherine Ryan Hyde; All the Little Liars by Charlene Harris; and Greyhound by Stefan Piper
