At the beginning of each month I post a reading wrap up of all the books I read the prior month.
February was quite the full month…but a slow reading month for me. Has that ever happened to you?! I finished up the drafts of my next book, Waiting For August, and sent it off to my first readers (Eeeekkk), and I prepared for my first ever writing workshop, which took place earlier this month. All that to say, I’ve been off my reading game. Although, I still managed to finish one book myself and one read-aloud with my kiddos.
So here are this months reads:
Fiction
The Diamond of Darkhold
by Jeanne DuPrau
The final book in the City of Ember series was certainly my favorite. There was more action throughout the book than in any of the others. There were more fun characters introduced who made me laugh and made me cringe. The stakes were higher and the pay off was higher as well.
My kids were really in to this series, even more than I was. That’s the reason I love to read with them. I read things with my kids that I wouldn’t necessarily read on my own, but also I read books with them that they wouldn’t necessarily pick up on their own either. We challenge and stretch each other. And I think that’s a huge part of reading!
They enjoyed it very much and continue to talk about it even after we turned the last page. And for me, that’s a win.
The Line Between
by Tosca Lee
This book kept me up at night, turning page after page. A young woman escapes the clutches of a cult only to discover that the world is slowly coming apart and facing a epidemic disease that might, in fact, be the Apocalypse that her ex-cult leader warned her about.
As a reader, I was thrown in different directions at first and wasn’t sure where this was all leading. One night, I had to put the book down because the diseased and crazed people infected with this epidemic creeped me out so, and I was concerned they were going zombie. I DON’T do zombies! But alas, (spoiler) it’s just a basic disease that makes people go a little nuts. Well, it’s a lot worse than that, but you know, not zombies.
However, the closer to the end, the more I realized the story would not all wrap up by the last page. Then I saw the fabulous Ms. Lee post on her Instagram that she was finishing up the sequel. THIS IS WHY I WAIT TO READ SERIES UNTIL THEY ARE COMPLETE! I’m tipping off the edge of my seat, trying to figure out what will happen next!
Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to be a part of the book’s launch and gifting me the book. The gift in no way adjusted my opinion or altered my review. I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Now, read on friends!
